The lectures cycle of the Millennium Institute Fundamentals of Data, which brings together researchers from the Social Sciences and Exact Sciences to study the large amounts of data produced by different institutions, companies and organizations of contemporary society.
In this context, the cycle of interdisciplinary talks begins to expose research whose problems could access better solutions with an interdisciplinary work that addresses the challenges posed by data management, in search of enriching methodologies and developing new solutions, one of the main objectives of Fundamentals of Data.
The meeting was attended by master’s and doctoral students, as well as academics from the computer sciences, statistics and political science.
The researchers Juan Pablo Luna and Rodrigo Medel are studying the segmentation of citizenship in Chile and Latin America, a study whose peculiarity is that it is based on the perception of belonging to the different spheres of citizenship, according to the distinction coined by the researcher TH Marshall: civil, political and social citizenship. “These are the three spheres that, together, make up what we know today as democracy,” Luna explained, adding that “democracy requires that citizens have an agency in society.”
One of the preliminary observations that Luna presented in his talk is the evidence of the crisis of representation that Chile and Latin America are experiencing. “Although Chile is recognized as one of the countries with one of the strongest democracies in the region, the perception of citizenship belonging to Chileans does not have a correlation with this assertion,” the scholar explained.
For his part, Marcelo Arenas, director of the Institute, explained that the lectures and seminars of Fundamentals of Data will continue with the objective of bringing closer to the community the challenges and approaches that data science is making to the project. the Millennium Science Initiative.
