ABSTRACT
The Joint Workshop on Interfaces and Human Decision Making for Recommender Systems will be held at RecSys 2022 in Seattle, WA, USA, 18th-23rd September 2022.
Recommender systems are developed to help users in finding items that match their interests, needs, and preferences. Since the emergence of recommender systems, most of the research in this area focused on improving predictive accuracy of recommendation. Much less attention has been paid to how users interact with the system and the efficacy of interface designs from users’ perspectives. The field has reached a point where it is necessary to look beyond algorithms, into users’ interactions, decision making processes, and overall end user experience
The IntRS workshop series focuses on the “human side” of recommender systems. Its goal is to integrate modern HCI approaches and theories of human decision making into the construction of recommender systems. It focuses particularly on the impact of interfaces on decision support and overall satisfaction. IntRS workshops have been previously held at RecSys 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 and, despite the long history, its popularity is increasing in terms of number of submissions, participation and interest by the research community.
The aim of the IntRS’22 workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners exploring the topics of designing and evaluating novel intelligent interfaces for recommender systems in order to: (1) share research and techniques, including new design technologies and evaluation methodologies, (2) identify next key challenges in the area, and (3) identify emerging topics.
This workshop aims at establishing an interdisciplinary community with a focus on the interface design issues for recommender systems and promoting the collaboration opportunities between researchers and practitioners. We particularly encourage demos and mock-ups of systems to be used as a basis of a lively and interactive discussion in the workshop. In our opinion, the workshop will complement the technical aspects mainly discussed at the Conference with specific topics related to cognitive modeling and decision making.
SPEAKER
Denis Parra is Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Science, in the School of Engineering at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. He is also principal researcher at the excellence research centers CENIA (National Center for Research in Artificial Intelligence in Chile), iHealth (Millennium Institute for Intelligent Healthcare Engineering), and adjunct researcher at the IMFD (Millennium Institute for Research on Data Fundamentals). He earned a Fulbright scholarship to pursue his PhD studies between 2008-2013 at the University of Pittsburgh, USA, advised by Professor Peter Brusilovsky, with a doctoral thesis on User Controllability on Recommendation Systems. Prof. Parra has published numerous articles in prestigious journals such as ACM TiiS, ACM CSUR, IJHCS, ESWA, and PloS ONE, as well as in conferences such ACM IUI, ACM RecSys, UMAP, ECIR, Hypertext, and EuroVis among others. Prof. Parra has been awarded a student best paper award at UMAP conference 2011, as well as candidate best paper awards twice at ACM IUI, in 2018 and 2019, for his research on intelligent user interfaces for recommender systems and on AI medical applications. He has also been selected as best reviewer at the Web Conference 2017 and candidate to best reviewer at ACM RecSys 2018 and 2019. Prof. Parra has served as senior PC chair in conferences such as IUI, RecSys, UMAP, SIGIR, The Web Conference and WSDM.
Prof. Parra research interests are Recommender Systems, Intelligent User Interfaces, Applications of Machine Learning (Healthcare, Creative AI) and Information Visualization. He is currently leading the Human-centered AI and Visualization (HAIVis) research group as well as co-leading the CreativAI Lab with professor Rodrigo Cádiz. He is also a faculty member of the PUC IA Lab.
