OPEN SEMINAR IMFD: "Data Management and Openness in Chile", by Jeannette von Wolfersdorff (Fiscal Observatory)
Data management and openness in Chile: Reflections on data and its relationship with the stability of our democracy.
By Jeannette von Wolfersdorff, Executive Director and Co-Founder of the Observatory of Fiscal Spending in Chile, and President of the Ministerial Advisory Commission for Public Spending, associated with the Ministry of Finance.
For Chile, one of the consequences of the current health crisis is the growing awareness of the value of public data. Without open data, there is no adequate public scrutiny.
Spanish philosopher Daniel Innerarity suggests that future democracies will differentiate themselves as sustainable when political leaders understand the importance of creating checks on their own power. In the age of data, an important part of these checks could - and should - be implemented by opening up all data that is relevant to the public interest. Because, ultimately, only an open democracy is a democracy.
So, beyond health data, what are the main challenges in terms of data transparency in Chile and what are the implications for our democracy?
MODERATOR: Carla Alberti, academic at the Political Science Institute of the Catholic University and researcher at IMFD.
