IMFD Reading Club: The Power of Data

The impact of data on power when viewed through the lens of feminism and intersectionality: this was the main topic of the first session of the Reading Club of the Millennium Institute Foundational Research on Data (IMFD) and the Observatorio de Datos y estadísticas de Género (ODEGI).

The meeting, which had extensive participation, was moderated by IMFD researcher Jocelyn Dunstan Escudero, who is also a faculty member at DCC UC in a joint appointment with IMC UC, together with Daniela Moyano, co-founder of ODEGI.

On this occasion, the discussion focused on the book Data Feminism by authors Catherine D’Ignazio and Lauren Klein, which was recently translated into Spanish by the Observatorio de Datos con Perspectiva de Género, DataGenero (Argentina).

More than 25 people attended the Club, coming from diverse fields, not only data science or computing, and the first three chapters of the book were discussed, with participants exchanging various opinions both about the book and about everyday situations experienced by women who belong to a world that, to this day, still has a greater male presence.

The Reading Club is part of the various initiatives carried out by the Millennium Institute Foundational Research on Data through its Gender Committee to actively promote the inclusion of women and diversity in the field of computer science.
