Successful 5th Foundations of Data School

November, 2022.- As part of the Jornadas Chilenas de Computación, the Millennium Institute Foundational Research on Data (IMFD) held the 5th School of Foundations of Data in an in-person format, with more than 40 participants over a full day. This gathering seeks to bring research techniques in data, from different areas of work, closer to students, academics, and anyone interested in the topic in general.

IMFD researchers Claudio Gutiérrez, Aidan Hogan, and Matías Toro, academics at the Depto. de Ciencias de la Computación de la Universidad de Chile (DCC UChile); along with Ignacio Meza, DCC UChile, and Pablo Badilla (CENIA), gave a series of talks and hands-on workshops throughout the day, which ran from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Participants learned everything from the theoretical foundations of a data project, to preparing and cleaning datasets, organizing data, and ethical considerations in working with data, in addition to taking part in a workshop on word embeddings and their uses.

The Jornadas Chilenas de Computación (JCC2022) bring together the most prominent names in computer science and computing nationwide, and are recognized by the two most important scientific societies worldwide in the field, namely the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and IEEE. This year the event was held at Universidad San Sebastián, at its Bellavista campus (Santiago).
