Matías Toro

Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science (DCC) of the Universidad de Chile and young researcher at the Millennium Institute Foundational Research on Data (IMFD). He worked in the aeronautics industry for several years before earning a PhD at the Universidad de Chile.

His research focuses on the development of programming languages that incorporate data protection by design, with an emphasis on formal techniques. He studies how to gradually adopt advanced type systems (such as linear or probabilistic types) to guarantee security and privacy properties. In parallel, he explores differential privacy and anonymization techniques, applied both to software engineering and to real-world data analysis, with applications in artificial intelligence and natural language processing. His work combines formal theoretical contributions with empirical applications, promoting systems that are trustworthy by design.

He is co-author of the Jazz programming language, which facilitates the incorporation of differential privacy guarantees into existing software. He also co-created the first Data Privacy course at the Department of Computer Science of the Universidad de Chile and is a member of its Cybersecurity, Privacy, and Digitalization Committee.
