Aidan Hogan is promoted to Full Professor at the University of Chile

Professor Aidan Hogan, academic at the DCC U. Chile and alternate director of Millennium Institute Foundational Research on Data, received further recognition for his outstanding academic career after being promoted to Full Professor at the University of Chile, the highest rank in the academic career ladder.

In accordance with university regulations, those who have established a high level of national and international prestige by developing innovative academic activities in terms of their concepts, content, or procedures may enter or be promoted to this hierarchy. They are also expected to have contributed to expanding the boundaries of their discipline, demonstrated a significant influence on the training of new academics, and had a significant impact on the overall work of the university. The opinion of those who enter this hierarchy must also be influential in their area of knowledge.

“It is an honor to receive this recognition. Perhaps the clearest moment to appreciate the significance of this achievement was hearing my parents’ reaction. They had few educational opportunities, so they placed special emphasis on their children taking advantage of the opportunities they did not have. Hearing their reaction—moderate, though less moderate than is customary in Ireland—I began to understand this achievement in a broader context, spanning two or more generations. It is also their achievement, and that of countless other People, Peoplesaid the academic.

From his perspective, collaborative work has been a key factor in this process. "Especially working with People expert than me in different areas. I have also learned a lot from working with students and looking at the topics I am an expert in from their perspective. Since I arrived in Chile, I have learned enormously, in an environment with a great diversity of internationally recognized experts in multiple areas," he added.

The promotion to Full Professor entails assuming greater responsibilities in leadership roles, academic management, evaluation of university activities, and institutional development. In this context, and alongside his current position as director of the DCC, Hogan reflects on the new emphasis of this stage of his career. "Now I have to worry less about my own career progress and focus more on the successful development of the next generation. But something very remarkable about the DCC is that even full professors continue to program algorithms, design solutions, prove theorems, and write articles. I hope to follow that example and continue researching and learning."

He also emphasizes the importance of actively supporting young students and academics, and of thinking strategically about the future of the Department. "It is increasingly important today to promote initiatives that will enable us to build a better DCC going forward. The challenge lies in prioritizing and finding a balance: continuing to develop teaching and research, as in previous stages, while at the same time fulfilling the administrative and strategic responsibilities that this position entails."
