Outstanding participation by IMFD researchers and students at ICML 2024
July 2024. DCC UC academics and IMFD researchers Hans Löbel and Denis Parra traveled to Vienna, Austria, together with DCC UC academics Rodrigo Toro and Álvaro Soto to attend the International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML), the leading gathering of professionals dedicated to advancing the field of artificial intelligence known as machine learning.
ICML is recognized worldwide for presenting and publishing cutting-edge research on all aspects of machine learning used in closely related areas such as artificial intelligence, statistics, and data science, as well as important application areas such as computer vision, computational biology, speech recognition, and robotics.

ICML is one of the fastest-growing artificial intelligence conferences in the world. Participants at ICML come from a wide range of backgrounds, from academic and industrial researchers to entrepreneurs and engineers, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows.
The research presented was:
– The paper "Hyperbolic Optimizer as a Dynamical System," by academic and researcher (IMFD-Cenia) Hans Löbel (RL1) and doctoral student Nicolás Alvarado, was selected to be presented as a scientific poster.
– The paper “On the Unexpected Effectiveness of Reinforcement Learning for Sequential Recommendation,” the result of research by Master student Alvaro Labarca Silva, who was co-supervised by professors and researchers Denis Parra (IMFD, Cenia, and IHealth) and Rodrigo Toro (Cenia).
Available:
– The paper “Towards Understanding Why Group Robustness Methods Work,” published by Álvaro Soto (director of Cenia) and Julio Hurtado in conjunction with doctoral students Nicolás Álvarado and Alain Raymond, was selected to be presented at the Latin XAI Workshop.
