Successful First International School in Computational Social Sciences in Uruguay
With a very enthusiastic participation of the students who joined the activity, the International School in Computational Social Sciences was held in Uruguay, organized jointly by the Millennium Institute Fundamento de los Datos (IMFD-Chile), the InterdisciplinaryMillennium Institute in Data Science and Machine Learning (CICADA-CSIC/Udelar ), the Interdisciplinary Center in Data Science and Machine Learning (CICADA-CSIC/Udelar) and the Methods and Data Access Unit (UMAD-FCS/Udelar)..
This is the first time that the IMFD has organized an international activity outside the country, to train and publicize the work being done in Chile at the forefront of data science at the institute. "It was very interesting for us, because we had a profile of students who had a lot of work experience, very interested in learning and asking questions related to their areas, which led to a very enriching and challenging interaction for those who participated," says Juan Reutter, alternate director of IMFD and academic of the Department of Computer Science and the Institute of Mathematical and Computer Engineering of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
The IMFD researchers who traveled to Montevideo to participate were Juan Reutter; Juan Pablo Lunaan academic from the Institute of Political Science and the School of Government of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and Juan Pablo Luna, an academic from the Institute of Political Science and the School of Government of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile; Magadalena Saldaña, academic of the Communications Faculty of the Pontificia Universidad Católica, alternate director of the Millennium Nucleus for the Study of Politics, Public Opinion and Media in Chile (MEPOP); Sebastián Valenzuelafrom the School of Communications of the Pontificia Universidad Católica; and Felipe Bravo, academic of the Department of Computer Science of the Universidad de Chile.

The International School in Computational Social Sciences was held at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of the Republic of Uruguay. 39 students from different areas participated in the lectures, workshops and presentations developed by IMFD researchers and academics from CICADA and UMAD.
At the opening table of the school, the following took place The dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Universidad de la República, in which the dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Universidad de la República, the dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Universidad de la República, participated in the discussion "Relevance and challenges of the use of computational tools and data science for social research", Carmen Midaglia, said that social research is increasingly interdisciplinary and requires training in the area of data analysis to begin to increase the accumulation of knowledge about the fundamentals and methods that are applied to address complex social problems. "Today more than ever there is a need for dialogue with other disciplinary fields such as engineering or computer science to address old and new problems in novel ways." He pointed out that the training objective set by the School can mean a source of innovation in the teaching of methodologies and in their application in faculty research.
This school also allows us to show the work of the IMFD at an international level, and to position ourselves as the main center for the development of data science in Latin America, as well as to publicize the way in which research and scientific development is carried out in Chile", emphasizes Juan Reutter.scientific development in Chile", emphasizes Juan Reutter.
