Jorge Baier receives the “AAAI-22 Distinguished Paper Award”

April, 2022.- The research, carried out jointly with Carlos Hernández, academic at the UNAB Department of Sciences and Nicolás Rivera, from the Universidad de Valparaíso, received the “AAAI-22 Distinguished Paper Award”, awarded by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), one of the leading entities in the field of AI research, knowledge, and development.

Jorge Baier is an academic at the Department of Computer Science of Universidad Católica, an IMFD and CenIA researcher, and leads the paper “Subset Approximation of Pareto Regions with Bi-Objective A*”, which focuses on finding optimal solutions for bi-objective searches, presenting a new approach that can be used as a basis for a search algorithm in this category.

“The work is applicable to a large number of search or planning problems where it is necessary to minimize more than one metric. For example, when searching for a route within a city, it is not just time that matters, but also distance, tolls, and pollutant emissions,” explains the researcher. An important aspect is that the solutions obtained, despite being a subset, are diverse. “This makes it possible to quickly provide a handful of useful solutions to a user, something we could not do before this work,” he explains.

This work is one of six recognized in the “Distinguished Papers” category, standing out among more than 9,000 submissions from around the world at the thirty-sixth edition of the Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence). With this distinction, the Chilean researchers became part of a select group whose publications aim to make an impact in the field of artificial intelligence.
