First IMFD Research Seminar: “Liquid Democracy: An Algorithmic Perspective”

December 2021.- Resuming in-person activities after the pandemic, the Millennium Institute for Foundational Research on Data (IMFD) held, in hybrid format, its first IMFD Research Seminar: “Liquid Democracy: an Algorithmic Perspective,” presented by Pablo Barceló, alternate director of the IMFD and director of the IMC UC.

In the presentation, Barceló explores the potential functioning of the “liquid democracy” system, whose main goal is to offer a different perspective on democracy and computational social choice. During the session, its pros and cons were analyzed: on one hand, it has a commitment to representative democracy, but on the other, it can be susceptible to its more oligarchic tendencies.

The event sparked various debates about how this algorithmic system would work, given the complexity involved in implementing it in reality, fulfilling the goal of this activity: to encourage interdisciplinary participation among the various IMFD teams.
