Nuestra MemorIA

  • Años: 2024 – Ongoing

Nuestra MemorIA is a transdisciplinary project that manages, analyzes, and interprets historical archives concerning human rights violations during the Chilean dictatorship (1973–1990).

Proyecto

The project was born out of the nearly impossible task of manually consolidating and reviewing thousands of scanned documents, old photographs, and audio recordings scattered across different archives and collections. Its goal is to develop innovative techniques specially designed for the analysis of historical documents and human rights archives, integrating the expertise and methods of specialists in human rights, humanities, and social sciences with developments in engineering and data science.

Nuestra MemoriaIA uses advanced natural language processing (NLP) techniques to review text-format files, as well as visual recognition techniques to detect and recognize faces in different images.

The initiative was selected as one of 22 outstanding proposals in the Fondecyt Exploración 2025 competition held by the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID), and will run for five years, from April 2025 to March 2029. It is supported by the Museum of Memory and Human Rights, the National Institute for Human Rights (INDH), and the Vicaría de la Solidaridad, among other institutions, and shares its progress through the podcast Nuestra MemorIA.
