8th School of Foundational Research on Data: IMFD present at the Chilean Computing 2025 Conference

As part of the Jornadas Chilenas de Computación 2025, the Millennium Institute Foundational Research on Data (IMFD) held a new edition of the School of Foundational Research on Data, a training space aimed at sharing tools and knowledge applied to data science, which this year focused on data privacy and RAGs.
The day had two main blocks. In the first, Camilo Maldonado, Data Scientist at IMFD Innovation, presented the talk "RAGs in real problems", focused on new architectures that combine language models with search systems.

During the session, they sought to understand how to handle text, vector databases and information retrieval systems today. In addition, they worked on building a modern information retrieval system, analyzing and proposing solutions to real problems, as well as identifying the pros and cons of using RAGs.

In the second block, Federico Olmedo, academic of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Chile and IMFD researcher, presented "Data Privacy: Challenges and current scenario in Chile", a talk in which he presented the main findings of the work "A study of Data anonymization in the public sector in Chile", by researchers Tomás Rivas, Federico Olmedo, and Matías Toro, all from the Department of Computer Science at the University of Chile that exposes significant failures in the practices of anonymization of microdata released by Chilean public institutions, and the enormous challenge that all organizations will face in view of the entry into force of the new Data Protection Law (Law No. 21.719).

The academic addressed the technical challenge of publishing sensitive data, introducing the concept of differential privacy as an international standard, and analyzed the national situation with regard to the new regulations. Olmedo also presented a study on the gap between the law and the current practices of anonymization in the public sector, presenting SERVEL as a case, highlighting the need to strengthen institutional and technical capacities to comply with the new legal requirements.

"The conference is a key meeting point for the country's scientific and technological community. IMFD's participation allows us to discuss urgent issues such as privacy and responsible data management, which today are at the heart of the discussion on digital development," said Olmedo.

With this 8th Foundational Research on Data School, the IMFD continues to collaborate in the Chilean Computing Conference by promoting spaces where research, innovation and interdiscipline converge.
