8th School of Foundational Research on Data: IMFD present at the Chilean Computing Conference 2025
As part of the Chilean Computing Conference 2025, the Millennium Institute Foundational Research on Data IMFD) held a new edition of the Foundational Research on Data School, a training space aimed at sharing tools and applied knowledge related to data science, which this year focused on data privacy and RAGs.
The conference consisted of two main blocks. In the first, Camilo Maldonado, Data Scientist at IMFD Innovation, presented the talk "RAGs in real-world problems," focusing on new architectures that combine language models with search systems.

During the session, participants sought to understand how to manage texts, vector databases, and information retrieval systems today. They also worked on building a modern information retrieval system, analyzing and proposing solutions to real problems, and identifying the pros and cons of using RAGs.
In the second block, Federico Olmedo, an academic from the Department of Computer Science at the University of Chile and an IMFD researcher, presented "Data privacy: Challenges and Current Situation in Chile," in which he presented the main findings of the study "A Study of Data Anonymization in the Chilean Public Sector" by researchers Tomás Rivas, Federico Olmedo, and Matías Toro, all from the Department of Computer Science at the University of Chile. The study reveals significant flaws in the anonymization practices of microdata released by Chilean public institutions and the enormous challenge that all organizations will face with the entry into force of the new Data Protection Law (Law No. 21,719).

The academic addressed the technical challenge of publishing sensitive data, introducing the concept of differential privacy as an international standard, and analyzed the national situation in light of the new regulations. Olmedo also presented a study on the gap between the law and current anonymization practices in the public sector, using SERVEL as a case study, highlighting the need to strengthen institutional and technical capacities to comply with the new legal requirements.
"The conference is a key meeting point for the country's scientific and technological community. The IMFD's participation allows for discussion of urgent issues such as privacy and responsible data management, which are now at the very heart of the debate on digital development," said Olmedo.
With this 8th Foundational Research on Data School, the IMFD continues to collaborate in the Chilean Computing Conference, promoting spaces where research, innovation, and interdisciplinarity converge.
