ANID Forum at Congress of the Future: Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Work

The challenges facing the labor market with artificial intelligences, was the central theme of the Future Congress Forum: Artificial Intelligence and the future of work, which was held in this event coordinated by the National Agency for Research and Development, with the participation of Juan Reutter, director of the IMFD and academic of the Department of Computer Science and the Institute of Mathematical and Computational Engineering of the Catholic University of Chile.

The activity took place at the Extension Center of the National Institute (CEINA), and was attended by leading experts such as Jeanne La Fortune from the Millennium Nucleus on the Evolution of Work, M-NEW; Mauricio Araya from the Advanced Center for Electrical and Electronic Engineering, AC3E; international researcher in AI ethics, Sofía Trejo; Francisca Gutiérrez, researcher at the Center for the Study of Conflict and Social Cohesion; and the moderation of Macarena Rojas Ábalos, biologist, master in journalism and science communicator. In the talk, the speakers discussed the current implications of the use of artificial intelligence systems as controls for workers in industrial areas, and also shared their views on how technologies have historically been seen as a risk to the labor force, but that it is also history that shows that society also has a great capacity for adaptation.

"Our digital footprint is being used and collected by companies and could be used to train algorithms and artificial intelligence models," said Juan Reutter at the beginning of his presentation. For the IMFD director, one of the central points in relation to any relevant discussion regarding the uses of artificial intelligence, must have as its center the ownership and regulation of access to the data with which the different AI models are being trained, since it depends on them what these models have the capacity to perform and also how and what they learn to perform.
