Research analyzes the biographies of Chilean men and women on Wikipedia
August, 2024. Study led by Pablo Beytía analyzed 9 thousand biographies of Chileans in Wikipedia, revealing content gaps. Only 19.2% are women and 0.2% transgender. A forum was held to present the work, with the participation of Aidan Hogan, alternate director of IMFD and director of the DCC U. Chile, Carla Toro, Training and Technology Manager of Wikimedia Chile, Patricia Diaz, Executive Director of Wikimedia Chile, and the author of the research, Pablo Beytía, ISUC / Social Monitor.

This analysis focused on more than 9 thousand biographies of Chileans on Wikipedia, investigating how social memory about Chile is organized on the Internet.
Trends and content gaps were identified across different generations and occupational domains, such as politics, science, arts and sports.
How is social memory about Chile organized on the Internet?
- The record of notable people who lived at the beginning of the Republic of Chile particularly highlights politicians, military men and lawyers.
- In the 20th century, artists are the most remembered, and nowadays sportsmen.
- Of the total biographies of Chileans available on Wikipedia, only 19.2% correspond to women, 80.6% to men and 0.2% to transgender people.
- The biographies available in the most languages are: Pablo Neruda (160 languages), Salvador Allende (122), Gabriela Mistral (119), Augusto Pinochet (118) and Michelle Bachelet (113).
