The Summer Institutes in Computational Social Science (SICSS)

The Summer Institutes in Computational Social Science (SICSS) is an international event that seeks to broaden knowledge in computational social science, promoting interdisciplinary participation between computer science and social science. This year SICSS will be held for the first time in Chile, at the San Joaquin Campus of the Catholic University of Chile, from July 17 to 27.
The event is organized in Chile by a group of academics from different faculties and universities in Chile, led by Hernán Sarmiento, IMFD researcher and Ph.D(c) DCC Universidad de Chile, who emphasizes that "SICSS aims globally to accelerate the growth of the field and ensure that they develop practices that are of long-term interest to science and society.A large number of institutions worldwide apply to host this institute, so having our site selected is of great relevance for those of us who work in this area locally".
SICSS is an initiative of the Social Science Research Council, created to provide training to a new generation of researchers working at the intersection of social science and data science, with the goal of incubating cutting-edge research. In the sessions, participants have access to participate in lectures from leading scholars in the field on a variety of topics, from automated text analysis to experiments on social network platforms; participate in group training exercises; and present interdisciplinary research projects. "The second week of SICCS in Chile will be geared toward group project work among attendees," says Hernán Sarmiento.
For SICSS in Chile, more than 60 people applied, of which 20 were selected based on gender parity criteria. Nine disciplines will be present in the activities, including sociology, statistics, data scientists, philosophers, among others. Twelve institutions will be represented, including the University of Chile, the Catholic University of Chile, the University of Santiago de Chile, the Universidad del Desarrollo, the Universidad Alberto Hurtado; international universities such as Columbia University (USA), Lingnan University (Hong Kong), Monash University (Australia); research and study centers such as the Center for the Study of Conflict and Social Cohesion (COES), Elige Educar and the Millennium Institute Foundational Research on Data (IMFD).
During the two weeks of activities, participants will take part in lectures, conferences and presentations that bring together the various disciplines in the field. In the Keynotes, the following will be presented:
Speaker on Data and Ethics, Claudia López(UTFSM, CENIA, FAIR)
Large Language Models - Felipe Bravo-Márquez(U. Chile, CENIA)
Loom Platform - Juan Pablo Luna(PUC, Viodemos, CAPES, IMFD)
Disinformation and network analysis - Marcelo Mendoza(PUC, CENIA, IMFD)
Online experiments - Mauricio Bucca(PUC)
