IMFD gathered professionals from the R&D ecosystem for the first workshop “Know Your Data: An Essential Step for AI”
The session, held at the Hub Metropolitano de Santiago, provided concrete tools to diagnose and organize organizations’ data before incorporating artificial intelligence into their processes. The workshop will be repeated in Viña del Mar, Concepción, and Santiago.
More than 30 professionals took part in the first session of “Know Your Data: An Essential Step for AI,” held on Thursday, August 20, by the Millennium Institute for Foundational Research on Data (IMFD) at the Hub Metropolitano de Santiago.
The activity is part of the External Outreach Project (PME) funded by ANID, through which the IMFD seeks to provide knowledge and tools so that people can diagnose, understand, and organize their organizations’ data before developing artificial intelligence projects. This makes it possible to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement before incorporating these technologies into their processes, and to foster dialogue about data management.
The institutional welcome was given by Camila Díaz Foxon, executive director of the IMFD, and the session was moderated by Antonia Fonck, coordinator of the institute’s Research and Academic Training Division. The talk, use cases, and workshop were led by Nicolás Estévez, with support from Juan Pablo Sánchez during the hands-on activity.
A day of diagnosis, foundational concepts, and applied work
The program combined conceptual content with hands-on work. The session began with a baseline self-assessment, allowing each participant to identify the current state of their organization’s data.
This was followed by the central talk, “Know Your Data,” which covered fundamental data concepts, from structure and lifecycle to the criteria for ensuring data quality, along with four methods for connecting data to large language models such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini.
On the practical side, the workshop “The Life Cycle of My Organization’s Data” was held, where each attendee mapped the path that data follows within their institution: from the questions it seeks to answer and how data is captured, to how it is processed, stored, analyzed, and used to make decisions.
The day closed with the presentation of use cases developed by the IMFD, which showed how these concepts operate in real projects, and a closing self-assessment to measure the attendees’ progress during the activity.
Upcoming Dates and Podcast Announcement
The same workshop will be held three more times: on Friday, September 4 in Viña del Mar, on Thursday, October 1 in Concepción, and on Friday, October 23 again in Santiago, this time as a hybrid session (in-person and online). Registration is open.
The project also includes a three-episode podcast miniseries, designed for the general public to extend the reach of the workshop’s content to those who cannot attend the in-person sessions, in an accessible format that will remain permanently available.
