Researchers from the University of Chile and Leiden University explored new opportunities for collaboration in computer science and AI
The meeting was chaired by Aidan Hogan, a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science (DCC) at the University of Chile and alternate director of the IMFD, and brought together researchers from both institutions to explore new avenues for collaboration, student exchanges, and joint doctoral supervision.
From July 27 to 31, the Department of Computer Science (DCC) at the University of Chile hosted the“Leiden ↔ Chile International Research Seminar on Computer Science and AI,”an event that brought together students and scholars for tutorials, technical exchanges, thematic discussions, and opportunities for collaborative reflection on the future of computer science, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and society.
The event, held at the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (FCFM), was attended by five scholars from the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS) at Leiden University in the Netherlands. During the seminar, emerging topics related to machine learning, causal inference, AI-based optimization, algorithmic fairness, and quantum computing were addressed, and opportunities for student exchanges between Chile and Leiden were discussed.
“Expanding our international networks is essential to create exchange opportunities for students in the School, identify emerging scientific challenges on which we can collaborate, and strengthen our participation in global scientific advancements,” Hogan said.
The seminar also included sessions devoted to discussing social issues related to computing and identifying potential collaborations between researchers from both universities.
Among the main outcomes of the meeting were the identification of areas of focus for future joint initiatives. At the institutional level, progress was made in discussions to establish a joint supervision agreement for doctoral students from both universities.
In addition, five doctoral students from the University of Chile are planning visits to Leiden University, and specific collaborations have been identified between faculty members from the DCC, the Data and Artificial Intelligence Initiative (IDIA), and the Department of Electrical Engineering (DIE) and researchers at LIACS.
“We hope these initiatives will lay the groundwork for an even more fruitful collaboration between Chile and Leiden in the future,”Professor Hogan concluded.
