September 2, 2020.– Coming into contact from the very first year with real, concrete challenges in data science is one of the key advantages that students of the new Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science Engineering will have. This program was recently made official by Universidad Católica, and the Millennium Institute for Foundational Research on Data…
“Data is a renewable resource, just as much as the sun and the wind.” This is how the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, described the value of digital information at the World Economic Forum in January 2020, an occasion on which she highlighted the wealth and untapped opportunities that exist within…
Since July 2020, associate researcher Jorge Pérez, professor at the Department of Computer Science (DCC) of Universidad de Chile, took office as deputy director of that unit, led by academic Cecilia Bastarrica. Until his appointment, the academic served as director of the DCC’s Communications area. Pérez holds a PhD in Computer Science from Universidad Católica,…
The literature that exists in Chile was more or less conclusive: it indicated that, in general, evangelicals were not interested in politics. “Historically, they did not get involved because it was a ‘forbidden’ topic. But what one begins to see in recent years, in the country, is that not only are there more evangelical politicians…
Santiago, September 2020.– Chile now has its representatives for the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) for high school students, which will take place between September 13 and 19. This competition was originally set to be held in Singapore, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic it will be held online. The 12 winners of the Chilean…
Last month, the researcher and expert in data science and artificial intelligence (AI), Ricardo Baeza-Yates, received a call he was not expecting: he was informed that he had been chosen, along with other experts, to join the Artificial Intelligence Advisory Council of the Spanish state. This is a consultative body whose role is to advise…
Marcelo Arenas and Cristián Riveros, researchers at the Millennium Institute for Foundational Research on Data (IMFD) and faculty members of the Computer Science Department at the Pontificia Universidad Católica, received the “ACM SIGMOD Research Highlight Award”, for the paper “Efficient Logspace Classes for Enumeration, Counting, and Uniform Generation,” which they wrote together with authors Luis…
June 16, 2020.– The book How party activism survives, based on research on the endurance of the Frente Amplio in Uruguay and how it maintains the support of its grassroots base, received the Leon Epstein Outstanding Book Award, one of the most important recognitions in the field of Political Science, awarded by the American Political…
It is the most important conference in the field of deep learning, or deep neural networks, “which is the most effective artificial intelligence (AI) technique and the one achieving the best results today,” says Jorge Pérez, researcher at the Millennium Institute for Foundational Research on Data (IMFD) and faculty member of the Department of Computer…
June 12, 2020.– Exploring the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic within the country since the first cases were detected in Chile, or comparing our situation with that of other nations; contrasting rates or totals of patients declared confirmed or deceased—these are some of the options offered by the Visualization Platform on the epidemic developed by…
June 3, 2020.– A new advantage has been added to the olfactory kit for Covid-19 developed by the Centro de Aromas y Sabores de DICTUC, at the Escuela de Ingeniería of the Pontificia Universidad Católica: the Millennium Institute for Foundational Research on Data (IMFD) has developed a computational platform that analyzes test results in real…
April 14, 2020.– Over the past two weeks, the Innovation and Technology Transfer Office of the Millennium Institute for Foundational Research on Data (IMFD) has been working full time to develop software that would allow health authorities to automatically anonymize the sensitive data collected from patients and suspected COVID-19 cases. This program fulfills one of…
Often, the different disciplines that coexist in the field of computer science—such as database theory and machine learning, to name a few—do not intersect. This is despite the great value that interdisciplinarity holds in the world of data science. This dilemma is well known to researcher Pablo Barceló, who is deputy director of the Millennium…
April 30, 2020.– Researchers from the Millennium Institute for Foundational Research on Data (IMFD), together with collaborators, published an article today, April 30, on Medium, in which they expose the seriousness that the lack of access to epidemiological information represents for Chile, the difficulties that other countries have faced in this matter, along with examples…
April 21, 2020.– Identifying which are the most complex places in terms of COVID-19 contagion risk or detecting the emergence of zones where a greater concentration of infected people begins to occur are critical tools that can help determine containment measures. This is the goal of one of the projects coordinated by IMFD associate researcher…
