IMFD brought together professionals from the R&D ecosystem for the first workshop, “Know Your Data: An Essential Step Toward AI”
The event, held at the Santiago Metropolitan Hub, provided concrete tools for analyzing and organizing an organization’s data before incorporating artificial intelligence into its processes. The workshop will be held again in Viña del Mar, Concepción, and Santiago.
More than 30 professionals participated in the first session of“Know Your Data: An Essential Step Toward AI,”held on Thursday, August 20, by the Institute for the Future of Data ( Millennium Institute , or IMFD)Foundational Research on Data at the Santiago Metropolitan Hub.
The activity is part of the External Outreach Project (PME) funded by ANID, through which the IMFD seeks to provide knowledge and tools so that the “ People ” can assess, understand, and organize their organizations’ data before developing projects using artificial intelligence. This allows them to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement before incorporating these technologies into their processes and to foster dialogue on data management.
Camila Díaz Foxon, executive director of the IMFD, delivered the institutional welcome remarks, and Antonia Fonck, coordinator of the institute’s Research and Academic Training Department, served as moderator. The presentation, case studies, and workshop were led by Nicolás Estévez, with support from Juan nd Pablo Sánchez during the hands-on activity.

A day of diagnosis, fundamentals, and applied work
The program combined conceptual content with hands-on work. The session began with an initial self-assessment so that each participant could assess the state of their organization's data.
This was followed by the keynote presentation, “Know Your Data,” which covered fundamental concepts in data—from structure and lifecycle to the criteria for ensuring data quality—along with four methods for connecting data to large language models such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
On the practical side,a workshop titled “The Data Lifecycle in My Organization” was held, during which each participant mapped out the path that data takes within their institution: from the questions the data is intended to answer and the way it is collected, to how it is processed, stored, analyzed, and used to make decisions.
The session concluded with a presentation of use cases developed by the IMFD, which demonstrated how these concepts are applied in real-world projects, and a closing self-assessment to gauge participants’ own progress during the activity.

Upcoming dates and podcast announcement
The same workshop will be held three more times: on Friday, September 4, in Viña del Mar; on Thursday, October 1, in Concepción; and on Friday, October 23, again in Santiago, this time as a hybrid event (in-person and online). Registration is now open.
The project also includes a three-episode podcast miniseries designed for the general public, with the aim of extending the reach of the workshop’s content to those who cannot attend the in-person sessions, in an accessible format that is permanently available.
