Researchers from Universidad de Chile and Leiden University explored new collaborations in computer science and AI
The meeting was chaired by Aidan Hogan, faculty member of the Department of Computer Science (DCC) at Universidad de Chile and Deputy Director of the IMFD, and brought together researchers from both institutions to explore new avenues for collaboration, student exchange, and joint doctoral supervision.
From July 27 to 31, the Department of Computer Science (DCC) at Universidad de Chile hosted the “Leiden ↔ Chile International Research Seminar on Computer Science and AI”, an event that brought together students and academics for tutorials, technical exchanges, thematic discussions, and collaborative reflection sessions on the future of computer science, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and society.
The activity, held at the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (FCFM), welcomed five academics from the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS) at Leiden University, Netherlands. During the seminar, participants addressed emerging topics related to machine learning, causal inference, AI-based optimization, algorithmic fairness, and quantum computing, in addition to discussing student exchange opportunities between Chile and Leiden.
“Expanding our international networks is essential to generate exchange opportunities for students at the Faculty, identify emerging scientific challenges we can collaborate on, and strengthen our participation in scientific advances worldwide,” said Hogan.
The seminar also included sessions dedicated to discussing social issues linked to computing and identifying potential collaborations between researchers from both universities.
Among the main outcomes of the meeting, work lines for future joint initiatives were defined. At the institutional level, progress was made in discussions to establish a joint doctoral supervision agreement for PhD students from both universities.
In addition, five PhD students from Universidad de Chile are planning visits to Leiden University, and concrete collaborations were identified between academics from the DCC, Data and Artificial Intelligence Initiative (IDIA), and the Department of Electrical Engineering (DIE) with researchers from LIACS.
“We hope these initiatives will be the seed of an even more fruitful collaboration between Chile and Leiden in the future,” concluded Professor Hogan.
