Bárbara Poblete, faculty member of the Department of Computer Science of the Universidad de Chile and researcher at our Millennium Institute for Foundational Research on Data (IMFD), will present at the 2019 edition of the successful Noches Nerd. In her talk “No crea todo lo que lee: las redes sociales bajo la lupa” (Do not…
ABSTRACT: We introduce a new type of recurrent neural networks which we call WormNets, as they were inspired by a biophysical model for neurons and synapses in the C. Elegans worm. WormNets are interpretable, smaller in size, and more robust to noise attacks when compared to classic RNNs. They can also take advantage of the…
ABSTRACT: Indexing Genomic Databases: Since the first human genomes were sequenced and assembled de novo nearly twenty years ago, hundreds of thousands of others have been sequenced and assembled by variation calling. That much data is a valuable resource but also a problem for algorithms and data structures designed to handle megabytes or gigabytes but…
Panel “Alone and Hyperconnected: The Paradox of Our Times,” Congreso Futuro 2019: In an era when a significant part of communication between people takes place on digital platforms, the main risk for society is treating them as an absolute source of information. What gets published on social media is not always edited or verified, which…
At the summary event of Noches Nerd 2018, the organizers put together a selection of the best presentations, delivered by experts from a wide range of fields. Marcelo Arenas, Full Professor at the Department of Computer Science of the Universidad Católica and Director of the Millennium Institute for Foundational Research on Data (IMFD), will be…
Abstract: An early vision in Computer Science has been to create intelligent systems capable of reasoning on large amounts of data. Today, this vision can be delivered by integrating Relational Databases with the Semantic Web using the W3C standards: a graph data model (RDF), ontology language (OWL), mapping language (R2RML) and query language (SPARQL). The…
Abstract: Until a few years ago, in social sciences, when a study managed to explain 10% to 20% of the variance of a phenomenon, its results were published in the most prestigious journals and influenced policy development. Today we know that many of them failed. In parallel, an ever-increasing proportion of human interactions began to…
On Monday, January 7, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tutorial 2 of the R Data Analysis School will take place, taught by George Vega Yon, PhD Candidate in Biostatistics, University of Southern California (USC), USA. Master’s in Science, Caltech (USA). Master’s in Economics and Public Policy, Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez, Chile. His research focuses…
R Data Analysis School, Tutorial 1: Taught by George Vega Yon, this session will include theoretical knowledge and exercises on statistical models for social networks applied with R and spatial econometrics with R. It is divided into three sections: Part 1, Motivation: (a) When data are not IID. (b) Model families: graphs vs. behavior. Part…
Although the benefits of RDF for data representation and integration are indisputable, it has not been embraced by everyday programmers and software architects who care about safely creating and accessing well-structured data. Semantic web projects still lack some common tools and methodologies that are available in more conventional settings to describe and validate their data….
Abstract: Government management or the understanding of complex social phenomena are just some examples of areas in which data is becoming a key resource. However, there are challenges that must be urgently addressed if we hope to make efficient, high-quality, and reliable use of this information. In this talk, the Millennium Institute for Foundational Research…
Abstract: Drawing on his experience developing and implementing the anti-corruption agenda for the Engel Commission, Daniel García (Executive Director) and Miguel Jorquera (Researcher) will present on strategies for academic research to influence public opinion, with the aim of turning it into policies that help improve people’s quality of life. Date and location: Friday, December 7,…
Date: Thursday, December 6 at 10:30am. Location: P303 – Philippe Flajolet Auditorium, Beauchef 851 AI and Social Media for Disaster Response and Associated Challenges Abstract: Sudden-onset emergencies such as natural or man-made disasters bring uncertainties in which time-critical information needs emerge from formal response organizations, affected communities and other concerned population. The growing adaption of…
Friday 11/23/2018 Philippe Flajolet Room, DCC UChile 12:00 pm. Cheminformatics meets the Linked Data and SKOS Abstract: Cheminformatics is evolving from being an area of study associated mainly with drug discovery into a discipline that holds the access, management, store, and sharing of chemical data. In this field, there is a lack of truly interoperable…
