Workshop on Digital Technologies and Indigenous Languages

A group of minority language researchers, in a joint effort, set out to bring together speakers of minority languages, linguists and technologists to discuss how digital technologies can contribute to the teaching of minority languages and to prototype novel and practical technologies for language revitalization.

A 3-day workshop was organized in which invited talks, short courses on the subject and a training camp will be held to develop projects and initiatives that promote the encounter between computer technologies and indigenous languages.

The workshop will not be archived and no proceedings will be published. We ask authors of accepted papers to present their work in the format suggested by the program committee, either as an oral presentation or as a poster. If authors have preferences as to the presentation format, they may indicate this on the final submission form.

Call for papers

We invite papers related to the indigenous languages of Latin America. This involves any topic at the intersection of computational linguistics, documentary linguistics, and language revitalization/conservation efforts by communities, as well as linguistic technologies, modeling, linguistic data collection, and other data-related topics.

We encourage the submission of work that:

1. Examine the use of specific methods in the analysis of Latin American indigenous language data, with a focus on endangered languages, or propose new methods for analyzing such data;
2. Propose new models for data collection, management and application in indigenous language contexts;
3. Consider what concrete steps are needed to facilitate more fruitful interaction between computer scientists, documentary linguists, and language communities;
4. Discuss the evolution and operation of collaborations between language communities, documentary linguists and/or computational linguists in the development of language technology for language revitalization efforts.

The presentation of papers by indigenous researchers or with the participation of members of indigenous communities is also strongly encouraged.

The organizers may offer financial support (flight and accommodation) to the authors of some presentations, based on economic and diversity considerations.
